The Stevenson Coffee House is a popular location that has continuously served students, faculty and staff as a cafe, classroom, meeting area, and study lounge for 46 years. The goal for the rebrand was to create a logo, color scheme and make necessary interior updates to location while continuing to honor the history of the Stevenson Coffee House. The project began in Spring 2018 and was completed in September 2018. This was the third College cafe re-brand project I have done for UC Santa Cruz Dining, as was the case with the previous College cafes involved significant collaboration between the Stevenson College, UC Santa Cruz Dining and Facilities. A logotype was selected by the college and Dining that used font elements reminiscent of historical Stevenson College signage. After discussions with the college and assessing seating and overcrowding at the cafe and physical location changes were approved that included installing bar seating along two walls–one counter height and the other ADA height approved, with electrical outlets for students to use. One of the biggest challenges was creating new menu signage without completely removing the beloved but visually challenging old menu wall and replacing it with new menus that are easier for visually impaired customers to view and meet the needs of UC Santa Cruz Dining by being able to update annually. The rebranded Stevenson Coffee House successfully opened for Fall move-in 2018.
